MEET THE SONGWRITER:
How would you describe the emotional world or themes your songs tend to explore?
A: My songs are observational and somewhat poetic. I don't like to be too literal. I start writing and let the meaning reveal itself.
Which artists or songwriters have had the biggest influence on your musical journey?
A: I'm influenced by songwriters who take a similarly poetic approach. Some writers I admire include Nick Cave, Reb Fountain, Paul Simon, Boy & Bear, Tom Waits and Tim Rogers.
Describe your songwriting process. How does a song usually begin for you?
A: I start writing based on a simple phrase or thought, stream of consciousness. I don't let self-doubt ruin the process; I just write as fast as I can. The meaning reveals itself later, and based on that, I edit and refine, which I find much easier than during the 'storming' process.
If you were to be stranded on a desert island and could only take two albums with you, what would they be?
A: Graceland by Paul Simon, and Reb Fountain's self-titled album.
